Write about a Film (800 word minimum)
These films are available free through the SWANK database in the Electronic Library Resources hereLinks to an external site..
Find a film version of one of the following plays from the Norton text:
Othello, 1455 (recommend the Laurence Fishburne version)
A Raisin in the Sun, 1555 (recommend the 1961 Sidney Poitier version, much better than 2008 version)
A Doll House, 1725 (recommend the 1973 version with Anthony Hopkins)
Death of a Salesman (not in textbook; recommend the John Malkovich version)
A Streetcar Named Desire, 1925 (recommend the Vivian Leigh version)
Fences, 1288 (recommend the Denzel Washington version–most students pick this because of Denzel–I love him too–but I would like to read more essays on the other films)
Watch the film and write a review as if you were a film critic. I highly recommend you watch with subtitles on to enhance your comprehension and appreciation of the play. Include discussion of the plot, cinematic elements (like lighting, music, camera angles), acting, and overall impact of the film. You may be informal and opinionated. Of course, you are also encouraged to consult the Norton text for a deeper understanding of the play.
As with all essays, MLA format must be used. The title of the film should be italicized.
